Dear TIPLA members:

As part of its ongoing outreach to independent inventors, entrepreneurs, and small businesses, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will host its fourth Saturday Seminar at the Elijah J. McCoy Detroit satellite office on September 7, 2013. Representatives from the USPTO will be on hand to conduct the all-day workshop alongside intellectual property (IP) experts.

Subject-matter experts from various government, non-profit, and private entities will discuss commercial best practices and the resources and services offered by their organizations. Whether you have a great idea for an invention or currently operate a small business, this Saturday Seminar is designed to provide you with insight into jumpstarting your creative endeavors.

Dear TIPLA members:
Congratulations to our new officers for the 2013-2014 season! The officers for the upcoming year are:

President: Scott Zare (USPTO)
Vice-President: Scott Seaman (Fraser)
Secretary: Kristen Fries (Fraser)
Treasurer: James Duggan (MST)

Thank you to those who provided us valuable feedback in the recent survey. To briefly summarize the results – the majority of our members want to keep to the current quarterly schedule – are interested in a tour of the USPTO in Detroit on a Friday afternoon – and are interested in speaker topics related to new AIA procedures (e.g., post-grant review proceedings).

We are in the midst of planning for the upcoming season and plan on hosting a fall CLE luncheon in early October. A brochure with all events for the upcoming year will be sent out shortly.

Best regards,

Scott Zare

Dear TIPLA Members,

Part II of our two-part series on Intellectual Property Rights in China will be held on Tuesday, June 18 at the Toledo Club.  The presentation will feature Thomas Moga, a patent attorney with the law firm Shook, Hardy & Bacon, who will discuss “China’s Utility Model Patent System.”  1.0 credit of CLE will be available (pending approval).

Doors will open at 11:45, lunch will be served at noon, and the presentation will begin promptly after lunch at approximately 12:30.  Please notify me in advance if you desire a vegetarian entrée.

Mr. Moga manages patent enforcement and anti-counterfeiting actions in China, and has researched and prepared reports on aspects of intellectual property in China to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S.-China Commission.   Last November, he authored a report for the US Chamber of Commerce on China’s utility model patent system (http://www.uschamber.com/sites/default/files/reports/1211_china_patent_paper.pdf). He was also invited by Chief Judge Randall R. Rader of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to a recent meeting held in Washington, D.C., to discuss developments in innovation and intellectual property policy in China with representatives from the Congressional Executive Commission on China, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Feel free to contact any of the Officers with any questions.

If you plan on attending, please RSVP by Thursday, June 13 to: ToledoIPLA@gmail.com
