The student IP Law Society at the UT College of Law is interested in holding a presentation regarding two bills currently moving through Congress: the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).  The intent of the legislation is to prevent the sale of illegally copied movies and music on pirate websites.  However, the legislation has come under a good deal of protest by various parties urging that the legislation would curtail innovation and encourage censorship.

The IP Law Society is seeking local IP attorneys and professors to participate in a presentation on the issues in an interactive, but relaxed, debate format.  If you are interested, please contact me or Fred Roth directly at roth.189@gmail.com.  For those who do not know Fred, he is the President of the IP Law Society.

Such an event would be beneficial in many ways and TIPLA strongly encourages our members (i.e. you) to participate.

We are excited to announce that TIPLA will be hosting its annual Spring Seminar on Wednesday March 7th, 2012, from 8:30am to 12:00pm in the morning. The Spring Seminar will again take place at the University of Toledo, College of Law (Auditorium). This year’s itinerary will cover a variety of IP related topics including patent licensing agreements and significant developments in trade secret law, as well as a non-IP related substance abuse portion.

The speakers for the Spring Seminar will include:

On Wednesday, November 16, the Toledo Intellectual Property Law Association will be hosting a two-hour seminar that will explore the recently passed America Invents Act in detail. The seminar will provide an in-depth overview of the substantive changes made to title 35 of the U.S. Code and will include a panel discussion (i.e. open forum) to discuss the practical implications of the Act for practicing attorneys and others involved in the patent process.

The seminar will be held at the Toledo Club (Garden Room) from 3:00pm – 5:00pm and will include 2 hours of general CLE credit in OH (pending approval). Beverages and small snacks will be provided before the seminar and during a short break.

The University of Dayton School of Law will host the fourth annual IPLA Symposium on Thursday, November 10. The daylong symposium will focus on “Pushing the Envelope on IP Reform.”

The program will include perspectives from dozens of IP professionals from in private practice, government and academia. The symposium is sponsored by the UDSL Program in Law & Technology and the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus Intellectual Property Associations.

The CLE presentation is entitled “Therasense Meets the ACLU” and will be given by Sam Han, Ph.D, J.D., Professor of Law at the University of Dayton. The presentation will explore the recent Federal Circuit decision, Therasense v. Becton, Dickinson & Co., which deals with inequitable conduct and the duty to disclose material information to the USPTO. In particular, the presentation will focus on how this duty relates to academic institutions and their technology transfer offices.

As you will note from the attached Curriculum Vitae, Prof. Han is a distinguished scholar and lecturer in the area of intellectual property law. As most of you are aware, proposed patent reform legislation has been passed by the House and is expected to come to a Senate vote in the near future. Thus, TIPLA is planning to hold a 2-3 hour Patent Reform CLE that will take place soon after the legislation is enacted into law.
